Matthew Hotchen's reality » 2021-01-08 the end of big tech

Big Tech has monopolised the internet and are simultaneously running it to the ground and holding our data hostage. It's time for a fair and competitive landscape.

There's a lack of serious competition in many categories. They lock people in using data. They are doing a poor job of policing the information that transmits through their networks.

There is a simple solution: give users complete ownership and control over their data. Create a simple boundary between the user and the website that has the website requesting permission to certain information and control. Apps could very easily be designed the same way.

Solid, a project led by Tim Berners-Lee, is an excellent example of this and what this new web might look like.

Data is literally the foundation of these companies and why they're so valuable. We give it away for free for a half-assed version of what the internet could be.

There are a lot of technical issues to solve, but we need to be making strides in this direction at all levels, code and education, law and international law, viable businesses, adaptation. The sooner the better.

We are currently facing big problems with the way the web is designed. It can be so much easier, safer, cheaper, collaborative, and competitive.
